Spinal Decompression Therapy, also called Vertebral Axial Decompression, is a form of mechanical lumbar traction.  Spinal traction is constant or intermittent pulling force applied to the spine to gradually stretch the spine. Traction stretches muscles and ligaments and increases the space between the vertebrae.  This in turn reduces pressure on intervertebral discs and nerve roots.  Benefits include relieving pressure on compressed nerves, which helps muscles relax and reduces muscle spasms.  It can be performed on the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacral and pelvic regions of the spine, and is typically performed in conjunction with other treatments to relieve chronic back and neck pain.  Traction therapy is the proven classic modality for the relief of painful pressure on muscular and skeletal structures.

There are different techniques used in spinal decompression therapy.  The staff at Birch Lake Chiropractic have extensive knowledge in these techniques and can provide traction mechanically or manually, depending on a patient’s needs.  The Clinic also uses advanced spinal decompression technology via the Triton Traction System to help patients feel better.  This system delivers pull patterns previously only available by hand and provides a safe and effective treatment option for chronic back and neck pain.
